A Classic Child’s Blanket with Grey Bands, Navajo, circa 1855.
The child’s blanket measures 49 inches long by 32 inches wide, as woven.
The use of horizontal stripes to create terraced triangles at the corners of the child’s blanket is unusual, and possibly unique to this child’s blanket. The alternating stripes of pink and yellow Saxony are also unusual.
The red yarns are raveled bayeta piece-dyed with cochineal. The pink yarns are European machine spun three-ply knitting yarns, also known as Saxony yarns, dyed with cochineal. The yellow yarns are also three-ply Saxony yarns, but dyed with vegetal dyes. The blue yarns are handspun Churro fleece dyed in the yarn with indigo. The grey yarns are un-dyed brown Churro fleece and un-dyed white Churro fleece carded and spun together to create grey handspun yarn. The white yarns are un-dyed handspun Churro fleece.
